Here is a very interesting vintage, that we shall have to defend toward the press and consumers. August weather was very poor, and many people already claimed that the vintage would be bad.
They did say the same thing for 2006 and 2004. Both vintages quality has now been recognised.
2007 was a rather dry year, with a measurement of precipitation below the average rainfall in the past thirty years.
The flowering was very premature (mid may) and the change of berry growth to berry ripening took place (for Pomerol) around the third week of July . August was dreadful as everyone knows, despairing for the wine growers…….
This beautiful late autumn, September and October., (the two dry months, sunniest for the past 60 years), saved the vintage. It brought at the beginning of September the needed heat to mature the merlots and allowing the Cabernets to mature as long as requested.
In Gazin , the harvest started on September 17th and ended on the 5th and 9th of October with the Cabernets Francs and Sauvignon. Beautiful Cabernets all around for this year that will all be included in the main wine of Gazin.
Our yields plots are 41,5hl per hectare, slightly superior to the 2006.
The vintage degree will bring wine at 13°, an average between the 12° for the Cabernets Sauvignon and the 14° for the Merlots.
The main problem of 2007 will has been the fight against the mildew (and the botrytis) that started in April so we didn’t get invaded.
Those who didn’t start to fight in time had problems….
Today, our two wines , l’Hospitalet de Gazin (2nd label) and the Château Gazin, which have started its raising in casks after the second fermentation (malolactic) in November, are doing very well .
They are not yet assembled, but the first taste offer a silky, fruity , elegant nose, with a certain depth and subtle wine in mouth. Thanks to September, October and to the wine maker.
2007 will not be 2005 but it could well take over 2006, that was a success in Pomerol. The Bottling will be taking place in April.
2007, keep an eye on it.! The presentation and the tasting of the futures will be held in April for the international wholesaler and the press.
