2004 TASTING : UGC WELCOMES THE PRESS AND THE NEGOCIANTS
- April 2005

The traditional welcome dinner party organized by the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux to welcome about 100 journalists took place, Monday April 4th, at Château Gazin. It is the second time that Château Gazin was selected for such an event in the Pomerol/Saint Emilion area, following the Château Grand Mayne (Saint Emilion) in 2003 when the UGC introduced the 2002 vintage. Indeed, it takes a large dining room to host more than 200 persons – journalists from all over the world and châteaux owners- and it is not so easy to find out such a roomy place in Pomerol! This dinner party opened the general tasting week of the 2004 vintage. Château Branaire-Ducru (Saint-Julien) hosted the journalists for the lunch which closed this event, Friday 8th. “The four day tasting for the journalists together with the three day presentation to the international and Bordeaux wine merchants in different châteaux – la Conseillante for Pomerol and la Couspaude for Saint Emilion- allowed to get more than 12,000 contacts” Patrick Maroteaux, UGC President, said. The very “classic” 2004 Bordeaux vintage should please the amateurs. The very nice September weather conditions we got in 2004 have produced a top level Merlot wine, in Pomerol. They were also of benefit to the Cabernet wines, mostly produced in the Médoc area. Providing the prices continue to decrease, Bordeaux and particularly Pomerol should be able to offer the consumers a very good value wine, certainly much better than most of the 2003 ( although some of them are very good), and less expensive…
